The Carriage House

Located behind the Kerr House Museum

The Carriage House originally served as a working outbuilding for the Kerr family, where their horses and carriage were kept. Today, it has been repurposed into an exhibit space showcasing a variety of historical artifacts connected to Clearfield County.

One of the standout features is the firefighting exhibit, highlighted by a circa-1900 horse-drawn steam pumper fire engine—a rare and well-preserved example of early fire service technology in the United States. This piece alone gives visitors a vivid sense of how communities once battled fires before modern engines.

The building also includes:

  • A horse-drawn funeral coach (hearse) once used in local funeral services
  • An airmail display, reflecting early postal aviation history
  • A HAM radio exhibit, showcasing amateur radio communication
  • A Banta icebox, manufactured locally in Clearfield, stretching across an entire wall
  • Additional radio and telephone displays, illustrating the evolution of communication technology

Altogether, the Carriage House complements the main museum by focusing on transportation, communication, and emergency service, offering a broader look at everyday life and innovation in the region’s past.
